The beginner’s guide to Chinese tea for health

For thousands of years tea has been an integral part of Asian diets and cultures. Long renowned for their calming, ritual and healing properties, Chinese tea is a mainstay in the life of millions. Multitudes of studies have been carried out on different types of tea and herbal tea preparations, but understanding the differences between them can be daunting. But with a little guidance and effort you can find a tea suited for just about any health issue you may need to relieve.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest healing traditions on the planet. It dates back at least 5,000 years. One of the main components of TCM is herbal medicine, and boiling herbs to drink as “teas” is among their common uses.
I previously wrote about the power of green tea to help prevent and treat rheumatoid arthritis and about Chinese teas for health. Today, I’d like to summarize for you the more popular TCM medicinal teas and their benefits.

Popular TCM medicinal teas

Medicinal herbal teas in TCM do not usually contain actual tea. Rather, they are a combination of different herbs, plants, roots and so on that is processed in specific ways and boiled together to make a “tea.”
Bojenmi Tea promotes weight loss as a healthful side effect. It helps you lose weight by strengthening the organs; detoxifying the liver, kidneys and intestines; moving stagnant energy; drying interior dampness and breaking up phlegm; and promoting urination to remove toxins.
Shen Tea is a traditional herbal tea containing over six different herbs that when combined help to nurture the heart and mind, ease stress, calm the spirit, soothe the liver, improve eye and heart health, calm the nerves, balance the emotions, reduce irritability and anxiety, and improve sleep.
Yin Yang Classic Tea is used to nourish the blood and boost energy. It is made by combining reishi mushroom, ginseng and licorice to help boost the immune system through its antioxidant and adaptogenic properties.

Benefits Of Green Tea

You have probably heard some of the stories about Green Tea and Weight Loss, but there are so many other benefits that most people ignore, or that they are just completely unaware of.
Green tea contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols.  Antioxidants are substances that get rid of free radicals which are damaging compounds in the body that alter cells, mess with our DNA (genetic material), and even cause cell death.  Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but environmental toxins (including ultraviolet rays from the sun, radiation, cigarette smoke, and air pollution) also give rise to these damaging particles.

Many scientists believe that free radicals contribute to the aging process as well as the development of a number of health problems, including cancer and heart disease.  Antioxidants such as polyphenols in green tea can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause keeping us strong, healthy and ward off aging.

Atherosclerosis

This is a condition where the artery walls thicken from the accumulation of fats such as cholesterol.  Clinical studies indicate that the antioxidant properties of green tea may help prevent Atherosclerosis, particularly Coronary Artery Disease.  Researchers estimate that the chance of heart attack decreases by 11% by drinking 3 cups of tea per day.

High Cholesterol

Research shows that green tea lowers total cholesterol and raises HDL (GOOD) cholesterol. One study found that people who drink green tea, are more likely to have lower total cholesterol than those who do not drink it. Results from one study suggests that Polyphenols in green tea may block the intestinal absorption of cholesterol and promote it's excretion from the body.  In another study, researchers found that green tea significantly reduced blood levels of harmful LDL cholesterol.

Cancer

Several studies have shown that both green and black teas helps boost the immune system, helping  protect against cancer.  The latest findings suggest that EGCg, a compound found in green tea, helps repair damaged DNA which may also help in the prevention of cancer.  Emerging clinical studies suggest that the Polyphenols in green tea, may play an important role, because researchers believe they help kill cancerous cells and stop their progression.  One example would be a country such as Japan, where people regularly consume green tea, and cancer rates tend to be very low.
